  1. CANCELLED: Seattle Prohibition: Bootleggers, Rumrunners, and Graft in the Queen City

    March 7, 2020, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM @ Main Library

Historian Brad Holden talks about the early 20th century backlash of Washington voters against drunken, rowdy behavior: Prohibition, the banning of alcohol sales a full five years before the start of National Prohibition. During the early 1900s, drunken roistering, shouting prostitutes and their customers, street fights, cockfights, and other rowdy behavior in saloons, gambling parlors, and brothels scandalized many Washington state citizens. That, and the graft and corruption around such establishments, provoked a ferocious backlash: Prohibition, and banning of sales of alcoholic beverages in the state a full five years before the start of National Prohibition. Historian Brad Holden, author of “Seattle Prohibition” talks this seamy episode in state history in a free program at 2pm Sunday, March 1 in the Everett Public Library’s main auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Avenue in Everett. This is local history they don't teach in schools!
