Celebrate Winter with British Ritual Dance
Sunday, January 13, 2019
For the seventh straight year Everett Public Library and the Mossyback Morris Men invite the public to help drive away the winter blues and celebrate the new year.
Looking like deranged chimney sweeps, the Mossyback Morris Men perform an ancient British form of ritual dance called “The Morris,” which celebrates the good earth and its seasons. Their spirited dances include large sticks which they clash together, handkerchiefs for flicking the devil in the eye, suspenders, colored streamers and jingling bells on their shins. Depending on the dance, they might don antlers or ride a hobby horse.
The Morris is a colorful mix of street theater and dance that has been performed for centuries to spread good cheer within the darkness of winter. Mossyback Morris has danced in the Puget Sound region since 1980. After their performance, the group will greet the audience and happily answer any questions about the Morris, life, and the universe.
