Armantrout’s Wobble, nominated for the National Book Award this year, playfully and forcefully evokes the devastation of a chaotic, unstoppable, consumer culture. Traditional nature (or pastoral) poetry celebrated the beauty of particular landscapes, flora, or fauna. And it’s important to remember what we stand to lose. But we’ve come to realize that saving select samples of the natural world isn’t enough. We also need to recognize the forces arrayed against maintaining a viable biosphere. There is a place in contemporary nature poetry for grief and anger as well as celebration. Poet Rae Armantrout will read and discuss examples of these approaches in her new book Wobble.
